Good morning Jeep Nation! We all know how special our community is, but apparently others are starting to notice as well. Some of our teachers in the high school did a unit last year about the opioid crisis that is gripping not only our county, but our country as well.
Last summer, Mrs. Cyndy Hykes read Dreamland, a book about the opioid crisis here in southern Ohio. She then handed the book off to Mrs. Judy Ellsesser, who also read it. Not only has the Daily Times picked up the story which can be read HERE, the Huffington Post, a national news and opinion website did as well. That story can be read HERE. Scott Simon, a nationally recognized and award winning journalist from NPR, came to our community yesterday to talk and report on the unit that Mrs. Ellsesser and Mrs. Hykes started.
The impressive part is that the author of Dreamland, Sam Quinones, did a video conference call during the day last week. That is a once in a lifetime opportunity in itself, and we will have video of that up in the next week.
This opportunity for our students to learn about the problems in our communities and wanting to change the negative, is nothing short of brave. There will be videos and audio put up in the near future. We are compiling and dumping the video and data files as we are preparing this article. We will update everyone when those are available. Have a great day Jeep Nation and as always...GO JEEPS!
