In Mrs. Dutiel’s 9th Grade English classes, students recently reviewed a novel they had just finished reading by using Hexagonal Thinking, which challenged them to make meaningful connections between a variety of themes, characters, symbols, and historical facts from the time period in which the novel was written. This served as an engaging and thorough review for their quarter exam. Students worked in groups and used their leadership, artistic, organizational, thinking and writing skills to complete the project and present it together. This was the first time Mrs. Dutiel used this particular learning strategy, and she plans to keep it to use with her future English classes as a way to help them to think outside the box and to grow their thinking and communication skills.
