From Mr. Ryan Willis, Jr. High Social Studies:
23 of our Junior High Students participated in the YMCA Youth and Government state assembly Nov. 18-20. The kids presented 9 total bills on various subjects ranging from vaping issues, healthier school lunches, making engine braking by semi-trucks illegal, reducing class size and several other relevant issues that effect their daily lives. I am proud to report that 7 of the 9 bills made it through committee, 5 of those bills also passed successfully on either the house or senate floor and 3 bills were signed by the youth Governor. In addition Hunter Slack was elected Lieutenant Governor for 2019.
All of these students have worked hard both on their bills and also fundraising. Even though the state assembly is over, the Youth and Government students will continue fundraising for the remainder of the year. This is the 4th year that South Webster Jr. High has participated in the YMCA Youth and Government Program and I hope it will be something we continue for many years to come.
